Anthurium Queremalense
A high-altitude cloud forest species from the lower montane wet forests of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador — a genuinely cool-growing anthurium that stands apart from the warm-preferring majority of the velvet anthurium group in its temperature requirements and its reward structure, which is entirely oriented toward patience and consistency. The leaves are long, elongated to broadly cordate, dark green, and genuinely velvety with a soft velutinous texture and fine glandular dots across the surface, carrying prominent white venation of clean, clear contrast that becomes increasingly dramatic as the leaves extend to their full length. Mature leaves on well-grown specimens under high humidity can exceed one meter in length, arching gracefully outward in a spreading, non-climbing rosette habit that eventually creates a large, immersive foliage presence of considerable drama — this is a plant that rewards its keeper not with rapid turnover but with a slow accumulation of extraordinary scale. Unlike most velvet anthuriums it is a terrestrial rosette former rather than a climber, making pot selection and horizontal space more relevant than vertical support. One of the few anthuriums that actively benefits from and requires cool nighttime temperatures to thrive — a characteristic that places it in a distinct care category from the warm-growing Colombian velvets and makes it particularly well-suited to growers in naturally cool indoor environments.
-
Light: Bright filtered indirect light — partial shade to dappled indirect light consistent with its shaded cloud forest origin. Avoid direct sun which scorches the velvety leaves readily.
-
Soil: Rich, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, coco coir, perlite, and a small amount of compost; as a terrestrial it benefits from slightly more organic content than strictly epiphytic species while maintaining excellent drainage.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Cool to intermediate — daytime 59-77°F with nighttime drops to 50-59°F essential for best growth; one of very few anthuriums that genuinely requires cool nights. High humidity of 70-80% is non-negotiable.
-
Watering: Keep the medium evenly and consistently moist — allow only the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Never waterlog; reduce frequency in winter when growth slows.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth; light, consistent feeding supports the steadiest leaf production. Reduce or stop in winter.
